Babilla

A few weeks ago we went to “Parque Tayrona” (again…) for “Semana Santa”. The park was packed, I had never seen it that crowded. We had to take that new alternative path, down to the beach, well maintained but much, much longer.

Babilla / Caiman

We made it to “Cabo San Juan” without a problem and before we could even think of getting into the water, a 2-meter-long caiman comes straight out of the palm trees and strikes a pause on the beach’s sand.

Babilla / Caiman

He just stayed there a few seconds while I ran and grabbed the camera but before I had a chance to aim at it, it just started running into the water then swam away peacefully. He obviously didn’t enjoy being the center of attention.

Babilla / Caiman

Following that, people did not hurry to return to the water. It appears that this Babilla’s well know to the locals, and that no one’s ever been armed. As nice as this Babilla can be, I will for sure, look into the water next time I go there, believe me.

The puncture

Tire puncture

2 weeks ago, just before finishing the ride, my tire literally exploded. Fortunately enough, I wasn’t going very fast at that moment.

Tire

In addition to the almost non-existent spikes, the sidewalls of my tires were completely worn out.

It was the occasion to replace my “Specialized Resolution” that I had never changed since the day I bought my Stumpjumper. I did not have much choice in 26×2.00 tires and had to buy the “Specialized Captain”. It does not seem to be the best reference in the “Captain” series. It’ll have to do until I find better ones.

It always interesting to have a look at the places we know, from the sky. I’m talking of course about Google Maps. I can spend long periods of time just wandering around.

Here’s the place we go mountain biking. The vegetation is pretty dense and the tracks are almost entirely covered by tree branches so you can’t see much from here. But believe me, it’s a real maze over there. It’s very easy to get lost and it is recommended to never go unaccompanied.

Trocha - Specialized MTB

What a relief! After leaving my bike gathering dust for almost 2 years, not knowing where to go cycling and who to go with, I am now able to go out into the wild, breathe some fresh air and spin my wheels onto the multiple single tracks waiting to be trampled!

I have now been introduced to some of the mountain bikers over here so I have no excuses not to keep going mountain biking everytime I can. I’m glad I could finally returned to my old MTB habits.

Those Barranquilla riders formed a club called “Pelicanos”. There are various groups within this club so you just go riding with others according to your MTB level.

I have cycled in south of France, England and Wales under many weather conditions, even on snow. But the humidity and the heat here, make the experience a bit more difficult. That’s why you need to get there very early and make the most out of your bike for an hour or 2 before the sun really comes out.

A night in Parque Tayrona

pmi_tayrona04

Last week-end, we went camping in Parque Tayrona, my 3rd time in this colombian Natural Park. It’s was amazing. Not only you get the jungle trekking experience leading you to the most wonderful beach sceneries you’ve ever seen, but you also get to see both sunset and sunrise in this magical environement.

You also avoid returning the same day which can be pretty exhausting if the track’s all muddy and full of donkey and horse’s poo.

My advice though: bring your own camping equipment! I mean a state-of-the-art waterproof tent with a non-smelly inflatable matress. We rented some tents on location and got caught in a 2-hour-raindrops-show that completly soaked our matresses within the tent. Waking up on the beach was so worthwile, I almost forgot that awfull night we had.

Oh, and don’t forget to bring an “Extreme conditions mosquito repelent” along with you or you might get stung to death before you know it.
